DIRBS Implementation in AJK and GB: Non-PTA Devices to be Blocked by September 2023.

DIRBS to Block Non-PTA Devices by September 2023 in AJK & GB

PTA has launched the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) to ensure the use of genuine mobile devices that comply with DIRBS rules and meet the regulations, SOPs, and technical standards. It is to be noted, DIRBS is operational in rest of the cities of Pakistan besides AJK and GB.

Mobile devices in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan that are currently active on local GSM networks will be paired with active phone numbers (MSISDN) from 1st September 2023 until the device remains operational. This means, all non-approved devices including iPhones (unpaid PTA Taxes) will be blocked with immediate effect by DIRBS in effect from September 1, 2023.

All unapproved devices (paying applicable FBR duty taxes) will require PTA registration after 1st September 2023 for uninterrupted connectivity on local networks including the Special Communications Organization (SCOM), which is the largest data coverage provider in the region operating under the Ministry of Information and Technology, Government of Pakistan.

What is DIRBS?

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority under the guidelines of Pakistan Telecommunications Policy, 2015, has created a system that prevents non-compliant mobile devices from being used in Pakistan. These devices include stolen phones, phones with duplicate or non-standard identifiers, unpaid taxes and FBR duties, and more.

To make this happen, the PTA has created a regulatory framework, which can be found on their website as the DIRBS Regulations. The system is available for consumers to register their devices and pay taxes via the installation of the Mobile Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS) or simply by visiting their website.

How Can I Check My Mobile Validity Status?

You can check your mobile status (PTA Approved Compliant / Registered) before buying or for your confirmation by following one simple step below;

  • Send your IMEI (dial *06#) to 8484 via text message or visit the DIRBS website or you can download the official DIRBS app for iOS and Android to check your mobile status as to the PTS disclosed compliance.

Note: FBR applicable taxes will be payable for "PTA Registration" in case the mobile device is non-compliant. Select any of the procedures below to register your device.

How to Register My Device & Pay Taxes?

All non-PTA-approved devices can be registered and all PTA taxes can be paid by following three simple ways below;

  1. Visit PTA DIRBS official portal to register your device.
  2. Dial #8484* from local SIM.
  3. Visit the mobile operator's service center or franchise

Note: You can choose either of the above three methods to register your device. Before buying a mobile device, check that the IMEI on the device matches the one on the box before purchase.

In conclusion, The implementation of DIRBS in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan helps ensure the use of compliant mobile devices in Pakistan and prevent the use of stolen, non-standard, or unpaid tax devices. Users should ensure their devices are PTA-approved to avoid connectivity disruptions after September 1, 2023.
